Hello my beautiful shining stars. Again, I am so sorry for my mysterious disappearance. Here is my latest work. Hopefully I'll be back with another one soon. It's taking a lot longer than expected for me to get over this artist's slump uhg...

The Best Brushes Ever

I am soooo sorry for my long absence, but I've been going through one of the worst episodes of 'artist's block' that I've ever had. Lately, I've felt no inspiration or motivation to do much painting, so I'm going to show you some of my favorite watercolor brushes.

I used to buy all of my brushes from a local art store with a limited selection and never thought much about the quality. The brushes I had ranged from full taklon to a mix of synthetic and goat hair bristles. Some of them were decent brushes, but I was never satisfied with how dull the brush points always were. I had to resort to using smaller and smaller brushes which is a pain, because they can only hold a small amount of liquid. And then I found them; Series 7 Winsor & Newton brushes. I absolutely love these brushes! They're made of fine quality sable, and are capable of holding a large amount of liquid while still keeping a razor sharp point. They are super flexible and bounce right back into shape after each stroke.

notice how fine the tip is even on the largest brush

Sable brushes are a little different from synthetic in the way they hold and distribute the liquid, and it can take some getting used to. They are pricey, but if you are serious about art, I'd say they're a good investment. I mean, logistically, if you use lousy brushes, how great is your art gonna be? Rocket science right? Master coco over and out.

Elephants prefer Black

Black Tea Party

medium: watercolors

Master Coco here. A thousand apologies for my recent lapse in posts. This is the finished painting from my previous 'painting in progress' post. It took me longer than expected to finish this considering how small it is. I guess it's time to start a new painting!

Mermaids

Crabby Neighbors

Koi

I like to paint mermaids in summer. These were done several years ago, so my style has changed quite a bit. I usually cringe when I look at my old work, but I still like these paintings.

Painting in progress

This is a little painting I'm working on right now. I like elephants. They're so big and wrinkly and cute and fun to draw.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

"Can you play croquet?"

Through the tiny door

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is one of my favorite stories. Something about it speaks to the inner child in me. Its cast of colorful characters and spontaneous plot-line makes it an illustrators dream. That's probably why there are so many versions of this book out there. I always find myself going back to this story and wanting to illustrate more pictures of it, so I'm sure we'll see more in the future.

"Cinderella"
medium: watercolors

close-up view

Out of all my paintings, most people say this one is their favorite. That's a little surprising to me, because I painted this several years ago. I do think it's one of my best, but I also think I've improved since then...

 "Grandmother's Photograph"

 "A Bump in the Night"
medium: watercolors

So, I'm going to start with uploading some work that I have already done. I've tried scanning my work, but my scanner always turns up fuzzy images. These are from my camera so they may not be the best quality images. I'm still new when it comes to marketing my work, and I have yet to get them professionally scanned and printed but here you go!

Hansel and Gretel

"Hansel and Gretel"

 medium: watercolors
15"x13"

This is probably the largest painting I've ever done. I started it as a Christmas present for my mom, but it ended up sitting in my closet, half-finished for a whole year. It just sat there staring at me, saying, "When are you going to finish me?" With almost every painting I do, I reach a point about halfway where I start to hate the painting (especially my larger ones). If I stop at that point for a long period of time, it's really hard to come back to that painting and finish it. However, when I finish a painting, I'm usually pretty satisfied with the end result.

First Post of New Blog!

Hi there! This will be the first post of my new blog. My name is Coleen Ball aka Master Coco, and I am an artist. My medium is mainly watercolor, but I often experiment with gouche, pen, and whatever else I have lying around. This blog will be dedicated to chronicling my adventures through the vast and mysterious world of art. I'll be posting my artwork, ideas, scribblings, and maybe even some tips and tutorials if anyone wants them. So enough with the lame introduction. Let's get started!
